Other Football Betting Tips 2010-11
Premier League Relegation
4pts Blackpool at 3/10 Paddy Power 1pts West Ham at 5/1 Sky Bet 1pts Wolves at 9/4 Bet365 1pts Wigan at 5/2 Ladbrokes 0.75pts Fulham at 9/1 Boyle Sports
Blackpool's promotion last year was completely unexpected by fans and media alike and their promotion party was testament to their joy at just being in the top flight next season. On the pitch though we expect them to struggle - particularly away from home where their form wasn't remarkable even against Championship opposition last term. Even if they can emulate Burnley's early successes on home soil, it's a long, hard season in the Premiership and we expect it will be too much for Blackpool to handle.
Moving on to some more risky plays and we have a point each on West Ham, Wolves and Wigan. The Hammers were poor last season and the merri-go-round of owners, managers, and players leaves them a real uncertainty this time round as well. They could finish in the top half or they could really struggle - given the uncertainty the 5/1 on them for the drop looks reasonable value. Wolves meanwhile acquited themselves well last season, with some notable performances at home and away. The second season can often be more difficult than the first for sides that get promoted however and we expect them to be in or around the relegation places again this time round. Odds of 9/4 look about right. Wigan meanwhile suffered some shocking defeats against the big sides last season and that raises questions about their consistency over the course of the season - again 5/2 looks fair value on them to drop - better at least than the odds on some of their relegation rivals such as West Brom.
Our final tip for the drop is Fulham. Fulham have been excellent in recent seasons and they have much to thank Roy Hodgson for. Such successes can be very hard to follow up though and with a managerial changeover there will be a good deal of uncertainty around how Fulham will perform next term. Odds of 9/1 therefore look good value for a small stake play.
Championship Promotion
1pts Cardiff 4/1 Coral 1pts Reading 4/1 Sky Bet 0.75pts Norwich 8/1 William Hill 0.5pts Crsytal Palace 25/1 BetFred
Cardiff were unlucky not to go up last season despite comfortably securing a play off spot. We expect them to bounce back this season and they could be a challenge for anyone on their day, provided they don't dwell on last season's disappointment.
Reading meanwhile had a strange season with some excellent performances in the second half of the campaign making up for some erratic form earlier on. They finished the season well and may well be back on the up after a few years of mediocrity and decline.
With no big sides getting relegated from the Premiership last season the title race is wide open and that could give one of the sides promoted from League One last season the chance to make a concerted push for promotion. Leeds are favourites of the promoted sides to do so but last season's champions Norwich look better value at longer odds and look reasonable value for a small money play.
Our real outsider however is Crystal Palace - in administration and very lucky to avoid relegation last term but at odds of 25/1 and given the randomness the Championship can sometimes throw up, we'll take a 0.5pts stake any day.
League One Title
2pts Southampton 11/4 Blue Square 0.5pts Charlton 10/1 BetFred
Southampton were one of the sides to beat in League One last season, despite failing to overcome their points deduction to mount a serious challenge at the top. Odds of 11/4 on them taking the title this season look good value considering the opposition.
At 10/1 though Charlton also look worth a sniff - a good side, and now with a season of League One football under their belts - worth backing, albeit at small stakes.
